Probably, the craziest thing to me is that at some point, the universe didn't exist. Trying to imagine true nothingness always gives me a weird feeling. Anyways here are some other cool facts:
Probably, the craziest thing to me is that at some point, the universe didn't exist. Trying to imagine true nothingness always gives me a weird feeling. Anyways here are some other cool facts:
- When you're looking through a telescope, the most complex object in the universe (that we know of) is not visible... Because it's inside your skull.
- The Tarantula nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud is so bright that if it were at the distance of the Orion Nebula from Earth (~1000 Ly) then it would cast shadows and be the third brightest object in the sky, after the Sun and the Moon.
- The fastest spinning neutron star, PSR J1748-2446ad, spins 716 times per second. That's so fast that the material on the equator of the star is moving 24% of the speed of light.
- An average supernova releases more energy in one second than the Sun will over its entire 11 billion year lifetime... By ten times. Also, there is one supernova in the galaxy roughly every 50 years, which means that across the universe one supernova occurs every second. There have probably been over 50 by the time you've read this far.
- All planets have sounds. These are recorded by very precise instruments aboard space probes flying past. Saturn is creepy.
